14350 : Videogame Level Design

Description: Level design is the process of creating interactive virtual environments and scenarios. Good level design is purposeful - through the deliberate placement of game assets, a level designer can evoke emotions and facilitate a sense of flow as the player moves through a game space. In this course, we will use an architectural lens to study the level design of 3D games, and understand how the environment is used to incentivize certain styles of gameplay. Course materials include classic architecture texts, writings on games, talks by practicing designers, and of course, a variety of games. This course will not cover the software or tools of level design, but instead focus on theories and techniques. We will develop a vocabulary and language to examine virtual worlds and analyze the intention behind their design.
